Weave In Photo Sequences To Liven Up Promotional Videos

by Alan Andrews

Video productions can and do help businesses with marketing and promotions. A YouTube channel with a series of informational videos might impress viewers and turn some into regular patrons. The more professional the videos look, the better the response becomes. One frequent stumbling block for small businesses, however, is a limited budget. When the company doesn't have a considerable amount of money to spend, concerns exist over what the finished video will look like. There is one way to "cheat" a low budget's limitations: weave in still photos with narration in the production. Doing so could create a documentary-like feel that takes budget worries off the table.

A Historic Way to Save Money

A clothing store may wish to nudge potential customers to buy the right clothes for the seasons. For winter sales, the store's videos could warn about the dangers of being underdressed. Images of people well-bundled up in the cold helps drive the point home, and a video of pioneers dealing with harsh snow circa 1867 could be effectively dramatic. Dressing up a cast of characters in period costumes and making a video with all kinds of props and fake snow, however, would be absurd from a budget perspective. Presenting a collage of vintage photos might prove emotionally useful and inexpensive.

A Visually More Appealing Approach

Photo sequences do more than save the project from a skyrocketing budget. The photos can protect the video from excessive boredom, too. They provide a break away from "talking head" sequences. A video featuring a host or two discussing the need for warm clothes in the winter could get dull when the visuals never change. Weaving in graphics and other effects help, but overusing them yields a dull video. Photo sequences present a nice change of visual pace.

Transitions from Photo to Photo

Don't assume one photo always cuts to the next. Other transitions, such as wipes, dissolves, and more, are possible. A talented editor could come up with excellent transition ideas to prevent dreaded boring visuals. Motivated transitions can appear as dynamic as actual physical action.

Thoughtful and Intriguing Narration

The visual images benefit from some help from voice-over narration. A compelling script that follows along with or explains the photo images might work. The narrator could add context to the video images while also staying true to the video's marketing intentions. A few revisions may be necessary to get the right script, but the effort is worthwhile.
